DJ asked 14 Feb 12Spanish in Spain vs Latin America
how big is the difference between Spanish as spoken/written in Spain versus Latin America? I guess I can basically make myself understood in both regions if I know the basics? And what type of Spanish are we learning on this site..?

it's true you can get by with the basics of peninsular spanish in latin america. since it's such a big place, each country has variations. in mexico for example, the 5th person (vosotros) is never used, the 'they' form is used for both you plural and they. argentinians use lots of 'sh' sounds when speaking, so to say "yo me llamo..." they say "sho me shamo" it takes a bit of getting used to. but as i say, it's a big place so i don't know all the variations and what is used where!
Greatigs from Guatemala Central Amèrica!! each country has their own pronunciation, is different than Spain, but if you learn the basic you can communicate very well in all latin amèrica, don`t worry.....!!!
In Guatemala we pronunciate the spanish very well... but we have our own words too jeje !!!!
I thought that in Argentina, they said more like the 'zh' as in pleasure? Also, isn't they 3rd person plural used in ALL of Latin America and not only Mexico?
I don’t think there are many types of Spanish as you state in your question. It’s just variations in the accent and pronunciation of some words. Of course, in Spain the language sort of conserves in a better way because it originated there. It’s sort of like the U.S. and U.K. relationship.
yeahhh good question, a friend of mine, from panama, told me that only mexicans use -qué onda?- and they say qué sopa? in panama
I am waiting for the answer.
