The past participle is the adjective form of a verb. It is similar to the ~ed form of a verb in English when used to desribe nouns.

Below is an example with the verb publicar:

   El libro publicado
   The published book

Also, it is used with the verb haber to form a variety of compound tenses as well as use the passive voice.

   Has comido?
   Have you eaten?
